About the Artist

Frederick Mershimer is a Brooklyn artist who specializes in mezzotint. Originally from Sharon, Pennsylvania, Mershimer attended Carnegie Mellon University where he majored in painting and drawing. He was introduced to printmaking when he moved to New York City and took his first job at a print gallery. He began to take classes in intaglio and soon began to focus on the seventeenth-century process of mezzotint engraving.

Before moving to New York Mershimer's work was figurative but when he started making prints his subject changed to cityscapes. Being from a small town, he was fascinated by the scale and layering of the city's architecture. The earliest prints focused on the top of buildings, which he saw as a substitute for people. Over time, the figure took on more prominence in street scenes, and recently he has begun to explore nature and its relationship to human experience.
